With the Pro plan, it is possible to connect your own domain to your marketplace and enjoy a free SSL security certificate at the same time.

Here you can find answers to the most common questions about using a custom domain.

Sharetribe does not sell custom domains, so you need to buy your own from a domain hosting provider, independently from Sharetribe. You will then be able to connect it to your Sharetribe marketplace.

A custom domain usually costs about $10/year, and there are many providers you can choose from. We recommend Hover, but any provider, such as Google Domains or OVH is fine too. Doing a bit of research on which to choose is recommended.

If your favourite domain name provider isn’t well-known, make sure you will be allowed to edit your DNS settings before buying your domain.

With any Sharetribe plan, hosting your marketplace is included, but we do not host your custom domain. If you use a custom domain, you need a separate domain host. If you plan to host other services (such as a blog, a forum or your own content page...), you will need to use your own hosting for these.

Sharetribe provides a dedicated SSL certificate for your marketplace address when your domain is connected to your marketplace.

Sharetribe will take care of your dedicated SSL certificate's setup and maintenance, so you don’t have to worry about it.

The SSL certificate for your custom domain is included in your plan.

An SSL certificate offers secure and encrypted communication between a website and a web server. It is used to protect sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords and emails from being hacked or stolen. In your browser, it is indicated as an “s” after "http://", which becomes "https://" and gets a lock icon next to it.

Unfortunately, using your own domain is not available on a free trial. Using a custom domain is available for the Pro and higher plans.

You can redirect your own domain to your Sharetribe marketplace URL (example.sharetribe.com) without domain masking during your free trial. This way, you can already start to promote your own domain, even though your users will still be redirected to your marketplace at the Sharetribe subdomain, example.sharetribe.com. This address will be visible in their browser navigation bar, but they will arrive at it through your custom domain.

Yes, you can change your domain later if you want to. This requires some manual operation on our end, but it is free of charge.

If you would like to move forward with a domain change, contact us and let us know what new domain you would like to use. We will then send you some further instructions.

Visit the Domain page (Admin panel> General> Domain) in your Admin panel to get instructions on how to configure your DNS settings and start using your custom domain.

Pointing the DNS records settings is only a part of the custom domain setup. After your DNS settings have been updated, visit the Domain page (Admin panel> General> Domain) in your Admin panel to check them and start using your custom domain.
