What is a Category?

Categories on a marketplace are used to separate different kinds of listings and group them together. If you sell clothes, your categories could be Tops, Jackets, Trousers, Skirts and so on. Each category can have a set of subcategories. Following the example above, the category “Jackets” can have subcategories as: Winter Jackets, Sports Jackets, Leather Jackets, etc.

Categories can help organize your marketplace better. They help users find the correct listings by selecting the category that they are interested in. For each category you can also set the custom listing fields and filters that are used. This is done for each listing field separately.

It is up to you if you create categories and how you use them.

How to create categories:

To create a new category, you should:

  • login your marketplace as an administrator,
  • go to the admin panel,
  • open the "Listing categories" tab,
  • create a new one by clicking “+ Create a new category” or edit an existing one by clicking the pencil icon next to it,
    -  When you edit or create a new one you can select if it is a top category or a subcategory to an existing category.
    -  You can also select with which order types the category is used. 
  • click save when done. 

- The category will be created immediately.

When creating categories it is important to think about making it easy for the seller to select one and for users to browse for. If a listing could fit in two categories it gets harder for the user to know which category to check out or they might miss some listings that are in another category. It is also good to think about the amount of categories in use, too many categories can be confusing for both seller and user.

What happens to existing listings when you edit a category?

When you edit a category all new listings created will use the new settings, however open listings will not change.

To change an open listing you or the seller need to manually edit the listing by opening the listing and click “edit listing” and then click “Save”. By doing this the changes will be applied.

How to choose which order types are used with a category

When a seller creates a listing they first choose category and then the order type. They can only choose one of the order types that are available for that category.

When you create or edit a category you can choose with which order types the category is associated with.

When an order type is created it is automatically used in all categories.

How to use different listing fields and filters for different categories

Different listing fields and filters can be used for different categories. In the case mentioned earlier in this article, the sizes for jackets might be XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL but for trousers there might be two different fields for width and length:  28”, 29”, 30”, 31” and 32”.

Which custom field to use with a category can be changed under “Listing fields and filters” in your admin panel. You can read about how to edit or create a field in this article and how to choose the categories for it.

How to delete a category and what happens when you do

To delete a category

  • login your marketplace as an administrator,
  • go to the admin panel,
  • open the "Listing categories" tab,
  • click the "X" next to the category you want to delete

When you delete a category you will have to choose which other category the listings within the current category will be moved to. If you have created custom fields specific to that category they will be moved to that other category as well. When you have chosen category click "Remove" and the category will be deleted. 

Deleting a category cannot be reversed!

How to change category for a listing

  • open the listing,
  • click “edit listing” on the right hand side,
  • at the top of the listing page you can see the category of the listing (and  the order type), if you have more than one, click the category and change it to the desired one,
  • click “Save”.

Can a listing belong to more than one category?

At this time a listing can only belong to one category (or subcategory if you use them). What you can do as a work around is set the additional categories as a dropdown or checklist fileds.

How many categories can I have?

You can have as many categories you wish in the two layers. However before you start making tens of categories consider the usability for sellers and users.
